Restaurants, Bars & Shops
Between Morillon & Samoens the chalet has the best of both worlds; Morillon is a small alpine village and Samoens is a larger medieval alpine town. Both are very picturesque, with Samoens winning the prettiest village in the Haute Savoie last year.
Morillon & Samoens have a lot of restaurants – they’re all pretty good and cater well for families. We recommend you reserve a table or if ordering takeaway, phone ahead.
Further down we’ve listed some useful shops, bakeries & supermarkets.
Let’s start with restaurants – we’ve split them into ‘town’ and ‘on the slopes’.
Restaurants in town
La Reposette by the Vercland lift is a firm favourite with a great ambience and menu to match. After a long day on the slopes, you more or less fall into it out of the Vercland lift, or it’s walkable from the chalet. It’s friendly, informal and just about perfect.
Next to the Morillon lift is La Puzze – a family favourite down the road from the chalet, where the tartiflette (the local Savoie dish and real French comfort food) and the potence viande rouge flambée are both great. It’s hard to go wrong here and the takeaway pizza is also excellent.
Brasserie Le Savoie is on the main square in Samoens, ideal for a quick lunch if you’re in the village, with snacks, omelettes, traditional and kids menu.
Mezzanine is upstairs off the main square and mixes traditional and unusual dishes.
L’Estanco is also worth considering, with a deliberately small menu of high quality dishes which are a bit of a change from the traditional Savoie options. Very friendly, tricky to find – the entrance is behind a bar on a road into the village.
Alti Pizz off the main Samoens square does good pizza and is good for takeaway.
If you want a bar, then Le Bon Coin opposite the Morillon telecabine is perfect for an apres ski drink and there’s a bar down at Lac Bleu.
Restaurants on the slopes
A big focus in winter, many restaurants on the mountain are also open in the summer – you just may have to take a chairlift or take a walk to get there.
Grand Cret is La Reposette’s sister restaurant, accessible on skis in the winter via the Grand Cret red run, or in a 4×4 in the summer.
L’Igloo is a great spot for lunch on the slopes. with a big outside terrace. Off the Sairon lift from Morillon 1100, it’s down the green Marvel run, or you can take the Bergin lift directly there. Great in summer or winter.
Restaurant Chalet d’Clair is at the top of the Sairon run from Morillon 1100, so is great for skiers and/or non-skiers to meet for lunch, with amazing views on a sunny day.
Lou Caboens is close to the main Samoens Grand Massif Express lift, so it’s accessible from Vercland too. On a nice day there’ll be deck chairs outside and a hut that does chips, snacks and drinks, so it can be a great family stop.
Bakeries
Fresh croissants or cakes are always a holiday highlight, as is a Croix de Savoie, or a beignet chocolat. Morillon has a Tiffanie open 7 days, with a larger branch by the Samoens Grand Massif Express lift.
Supermarkets & Eating In
If you fancy eating in but someone else doing the cooking, LvF Family Cuisine do home delivery of prepared meals ready for heating, with excellent curries often on the menu – a nice change from the usual French cuisine.
Carrefour is just over the other side of the valley and will do for most of your needs or at a push, Taninges (SuperU).
Small shops in Morillon (Intermarche) or the excellent Sherpa in Samoens are pretty useful for essentials or if the big supermarkets are closed.
Specialist Shops
Market day in Samoens is Wednesday and in Morillon it’s Sunday.
Wine shop Le nez en l’air is rightly highly rated, with a great selection. The knowledgeable and friendly owner arranges regular tasting sessions.
We also like La Feuille de Vigne Savoyarde on the street into town from the roundabout – we’ve never been disappointed with the wine here and there’s a good selection.
For household equipment, Savoie pottery, knick knacks, and gifts consider Granger Quincaillerie in Samoens.
